What Is Local SEO, Actually?
Local SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the process of making your business visible when people search for products or services in your area. It's different from regular SEO in one critical way: location is the primary ranking signal.
When someone in Rosebank searches "graphic designer johannesburg," Google doesn't just want to know who makes the best websites — it wants to know who is relevant, trustworthy, and local. Your job is to prove all three.
South Africa's mobile internet penetration is above 90%. Most of your potential customers are searching on their phones right now, for exactly what you sell. "Near me" searches in South Africa have grown over 200% in the past three years. The question isn't whether people are looking for you — it's whether Google is showing them you.
Step 1: Own Your Google Business Profile
If you do nothing else, do this. Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is your single most powerful local SEO asset — and it's completely free.
Set It Up Properly
Most Johannesburg businesses either haven't claimed their profile, or they've set it up once and never touched it again. Here's what a properly optimised profile looks like:
- Business Name: Exact match to your legal/trading name. No keyword stuffing ("Joe's Plumbing ★ Best Plumber Sandton"). Google will suspend you.
- Category: Choose your primary category carefully — this is a major ranking factor. Add secondary categories where relevant.
- Address: Consistent with your website, social media, and every directory listing. Exactly consistent.
- Phone number: Local landline or mobile. Consistent everywhere online.
- Business hours: Keep these current. Nothing kills trust faster than "opens at 8am" when you're closed.
- Website URL: Link to a relevant page, not always just your homepage.
- Description: 750 characters. Use your main keywords naturally in the first sentence or two.
- Photos: Real photos — your shop, your team, your work. At minimum: cover photo, logo, interior, exterior, team shots.
- Services/Products: Add them all. This helps Google understand what you do.
Post Regularly
Google Business Profile has a built-in posting feature that almost no Joburg businesses use. Posting weekly — offers, news, tips, events — signals to Google that you're an active, credible business. It takes 10 minutes. Your competitors aren't doing it. You should be.
Step 2: Fix Your NAP Consistency
NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number. It needs to be identical everywhere your business appears online — your website, Google, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Yellow Pages, local directories, your WhatsApp Business profile. Everywhere.
You registered as "Acme Solutions (Pty) Ltd" but list yourself as "Acme Solutions" on Google and "Acme Solutions JHB" on Facebook. To Google's algorithm, these might be three different businesses. Inconsistent NAP is one of the top reasons Johannesburg businesses don't rank locally — and it's one of the easiest fixes.
Audit every online listing. Search your business name in Google. Check every platform. Make them all identical. Write it down. Keep it that way forever.
Step 3: Add Location Signals to Your Website
Your website is the foundation. Google needs to clearly understand where you are and what you do. Here's how to signal that:
Page Titles and Meta Descriptions
Every page title should include your primary service and your location. "Accounting Services Johannesburg | ABC Accountants" is infinitely better than "Home | ABC Accountants." Your meta description should mention your suburb, area, or city where natural.
Your Homepage and About Page
Explicitly mention your location and the areas you serve. Don't make Google guess where you are. A footer line like "Proudly serving Johannesburg, Sandton, Randburg, Midrand and surrounding areas" does real work.
Create Location-Specific Pages
If you serve multiple areas, create a dedicated page for each major one: "SEO Services Sandton," "SEO Services Midrand," "SEO Services Pretoria." Each page should be genuinely useful — not just the same content with the suburb name swapped. That's keyword stuffing and Google penalises it.
Embed a Google Map
Simple but effective. Embed your Google Maps location on your Contact page. It reinforces your location data and improves the signal Google uses to rank you locally.
Step 4: Google Reviews Are Not Optional
Reviews are one of Google's top three local ranking factors. Not just the number of reviews — the frequency, quality, and recency matter. A business with 200 reviews from three years ago is often outranked by a competitor with 30 reviews from the past six months.
- Create a short Google review link and save it as a WhatsApp quick reply
- After every positive interaction, send the client a WhatsApp: "If we helped, we'd love a quick Google review — it helps more people in JHB find us."
- Add your review link to email signatures, invoices, and receipts
- Never offer incentives for reviews — Google will penalise you
- Respond to every review, positive or negative, within 48 hours
Responding to reviews is itself a ranking signal. A professional, helpful response to a negative review does less damage than you'd expect — and often builds more trust than a wall of five-star scores with no replies.
Step 5: Build Local Authority Through Links
Links from other South African websites pointing to yours tell Google you're a real, trusted, local business. This is called link building, and it's one of the most misunderstood parts of SEO.
You don't need links from Forbes. You need links from:
- The Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce or local business associations
- South African industry directories relevant to your sector
- Local news sites — Joburg press, community platforms, neighbourhood sites
- Suppliers, partners, and clients who can link to your site from theirs
- Sponsorships of local events, schools, or sports clubs (they almost always list sponsors on their site)
One good link from a trusted .co.za domain is worth more than 50 links from generic overseas directories. Quality over quantity, every time.
Step 6: Mobile-First or Nothing
Google indexes your mobile site first — not your desktop site. If your website loads slowly on a phone, displays poorly on a smaller screen, or frustrates mobile users, you're being penalised in rankings every single day.
Check your site right now on your phone. Is the text readable without zooming? Do buttons have enough space to tap? Does it load in under 3 seconds on a standard SA mobile connection? If the answer to any of those is no, you have work to do.
Go to PageSpeed Insights (search it in Google — it's free). Enter your website URL. Look at your Mobile score. Anything below 70 is hurting your rankings. Most Joburg business websites score in the 30–50 range. This is a significant competitive opportunity.
